I had a customer with a similar issue in his Z Car. It only crapped out when he was 500 miles from my shop. We replaced the ECU, distributor, fuel pump and relay, pressure regulator and temp sender with good used parts. After 3 months we removed one part and let him drive another 3 months. When it finally crapped out a year later we had it diagnosed as a bad ECU (super rare for one to go bad). Car would flood out and die, then after 15 minutes it restarted and ran fine.
Pop's Cadillac Eldorado, had a lock up solenoid on the torque converter crap out on him. Of course it was when He and Mom drove to central Florida to get on a cruise ship for a week. They drove it home all 800 miles with the converter locking and unlocking every few seconds. Mom did most of the driving to keep the old man from going crazy. The tranny overhaul cost him $1700. He is 92 and she just turned 88 (it happened this year). You can bet next time they will just rent a car if they ever drive that far again.

Jeesus, I had a 1Y deferrment in 1969 due to inguenal hernia (birth defect). Doc at pre induction physical, 3 weeks after my 18th birthday, told me I sould get it fixed before it strangulated. I told him there was no way in hades I was going to pay to have it repaired so they could draft me, ship me to Nam, and get it shot off and sent back in a body bag.
I waited 40 years until it got so bad I could jog and it would feel like my junk was falling out. Got it fixed and 3 years later they had to go back in when sutures started coming out of the same area. $5800 for the redo and I had to pay another co-pay. It was not a good day to be working in the hospital when I went in the second time, a very unhappy camper.

Glad you didn't have to leave 'the world.'
40-years! I'm amazed.I went 5-years before my other side got repaired.Laproscopic.Small incision/inflation/mesh insertion/stapling/suture.It's held great since 2002.
Having to go back in would be a tough one.

If I can't make it to 130,then I can't get to the 2-mile course of the 150-mph Club, where she'd have more of a chance to reach terminal velocity.

Can't you convince them to let you start further downrange - it's a flying start measurement after all.

I was out of town overnight and your thread jumped 2 pages,

What I heard this year was you have to have two parachutes to go 200mph.

My power-to-weight is so puny that in the mile,I'll never make it to 130.

She's really a 'long-course' vehicle behaving as L.J.K.Setright described the Citroen CX of the 1970s.He said that the CX would just continue to accelerate given the chance, continually gaining speed as if she had no really discernible top speed.

The mention made me smile. My thought is: 8-wheel push truck geared for 60ft times.
Old Mechanic -- Humankind has had bad backs since we stood upright. We could start a club. I went from stoop labor to back-breaking labor [accident loading a box car] to standing on concrete. And now I find out sitting in a chair will keel you.

My dad's back was injured a few times by the time that my childhood was over. The last time he had a good job in San José, California, and his work accommodated his bad back by giving him one of those kneeling chairs. He noticed that a wheel was wobbly, so he left a note for maintenance, and the next day the wheel came loose, jerking his back a few inches, and he was unable to hold down a job for five years.
So yes, chairs may try to kill you, or at least ruin your life.

OT But I'm jumping in.
I get around this by spending a fair portion of my job ON my back. Building maintenance affords a surprising number of opportunities to get your work done while supine.
And filthy, but that's beside the point.

I think it's a matter of respect for those who've invested thousands more hours and wheelbarrows more cash on their race cars.
The weather can be touchy, and if I'm 'wasting' everybody's time creeping down the longer course with the 130-Club,I could jeopardize some of the other USFRA members opportunity to run while the salt is dry.
If they make an exception for me,then they've set a precedent which might open a can of worms for them leading to regret.
If the A-2 Wind Tunnel can give me an accurate Cd,then I've really learned what I wanted to know.
Black Rock Desert is near where my brother lives in Nevada.I might look at that area.
