That's exactly what I would do.
Or make a 'one-shot' mold which includes the allowance for the pie-cut and cast a lighter-weight shell inside that.
The caveat: If you have Femme-bots with goats,stay with the original heavy-wall boat hull.A goat can render a light shell fit for the landfill overnight!
