Emulating the Atkinson effect in an Otto engine doesn't lead it to become a real Atkinson, it's still an Otto. What makes a real Atkinson engine is the characteristic articulated crankshaft.

Sure the real Atkinson is actually better than the Atkinson-like one used in hybrids, altough more complicated to manufacture due to the crankshaft design.
