Camshaft regrinding for fuel economy

Emulating the Atkinson effect in an Otto engine doesn't lead it to become a real Atkinson, it's still an Otto. What makes a real Atkinson engine is the characteristic articulated crankshaft.

Sure the real Atkinson is actually better than the Atkinson-like one used in hybrids, altough more complicated to manufacture due to the crankshaft design.

It is difficult to regrind a cam for economy if the factory did not studied and manufacture an improved camshaft already because it does require a huge amount of testing.

"Atkinsoning" camshaft is only suitable on twin cam engines.

On non performance engines, it is a high probability that the camshaft is difficult to improve upon.
Maybe a little more exhaust lift and duration to purge the cylinders more efficiently.
Maybe a little less inlet duration at the expense of top end power.

I would not do it unless there is a known alternative timing based on that particular engine ...
