Only ever had experience of "normal" autos, the avensis in my garage had a 3 speed box and was ok for pulse and glide..
Dunno how practical that is with your setup.
Re the gunking, seems that these engines have "flap" issues with gunking,few threads on Pistonheads re it. Not in the same magnitude of issue as BMW diesels though!
