PPS - thinking of taking a look in the intake system. A few threads have been posted elsewhere on how grungy it can get in there, maybe a cleanup is needed.

Only ever had experience of "normal" autos, the avensis in my garage had a 3 speed box and was ok for pulse and glide..

Dunno how practical that is with your setup.

Re the gunking, seems that these engines have "flap" issues with gunking, few threads on Pistonheads re it. Not in the same magnitude of issue as BMW diesels though!

Hermann has a normal auto box pretending to be something fancier - a little like Cadillac trying to pretend they are as hip and special as BMW but failing usually. Not sure on pulse and glide for two reasons :

- The box sometimes doesn't kick down, which combined with turbo lag means no pulse.
- The box changes down as you slow unless I change to N.

Gunking like this ?

Thats what I was looking at. There is a fair amount of disassembly involved to get at those parts and a better designed manifold part for swirl flaps which is spendy, as everything is on this thing.

Had a "moment" with it yesterday when cold - moved it off the drive and reversing it back there was no movement in R. Swapped back to D and then to R again and it moved like there was no problem.

Rarely drive it?

I do not know how good of an example I am. My Ultragauge currently reads 25.7 and Bacon is rated 24 MPG highway, but only eighteen city and twenty combined. I just try to keep my car from downshifting. I believe that is DWL. I started looking at the threads on torque-locking, although while I like my car, I would rather replace than modify.

As I keep saying, a Civic HX is rated 30/39. How in the world could I do that with a Forester?

Arragonis, I imagine that your car is far nicer than my Subaru, and you should enjoy it.

You know, I do not think that a single person told me that I should have bought a manual!

You guys are slacking!

In your initial post, you explained why you had an automatic, and you have every right to stop discussing that. I think that people should have left it alone.

I do advocate driving with load. I really think that it helps.

Why do you need the box to kick down? If you do P&G where your lowest speed is at the bottom rev range that 6th will turn, you'll get the hard acceleration in high gear- I did all my P&G in the iS and saab using 5th.

Is shifting to neutral a "pull both paddles and get N" or "move the selector to N"?

that looks like fun! symptoms seem to be poor fuel consumption, and hesitancy when throttle pedal pressed? TBH if you've got some cash tied up in it, its probably worth getting a decent Indy to have a look at it for you?

that sounds odd re the gearbox- you checked the fluid level? My bro's old BMW auto used to do that when the box was low on fluid. no reverse, select 1st, then back to reverse and she's move

And at moderate loads / high EGR , that's not going to get any better by itself ...

Modern "clean" diesels are dirtier than ever, and a mess to work on to clean out the gunk.

Hadn't tried both paddles, will give that a go. I was shifting the lever. I don't worry too much about going into N but going back to D makes me uneasy which means this strategy is being used less than I would like.

The linky including instructions on how to clean various parts, the owner also went for an EGR delete. I'll get the garage to check the fluid level at some point - this week is going to be tricky though.

And Hermann might be off to Audi to have some rust (yes really, rust ) sorted out...

Right Edinburgh - you suck, majorly. Pretty much every road I used this morning has cones and temp traffic lights on it.

And maybe Scottish Gas Networks can explain why they have to dig up the same parts over and over again...

So I give up.
