Why do you need the box to kick down? If you do P&G where your lowest speed is at the bottom rev range that 6th will turn, you'll get the hard acceleration in high gear- I did all my P&G in the iS and saab using 5th.
Is shifting to neutral a "pull both paddles and get N" or "move the selector to N"?

Gunking like this ?
Thats what I was looking at. There is a fair amount of disassembly involved to get at those parts and a better designed manifold part for swirl flaps which is spendy, as everything is on this thing.
Had a "moment" with it yesterday when cold - moved it off the drive and reversing it back there was no movement in R. Swapped back to D and then to R again and it moved like there was no problem.

that looks like fun! symptoms seem to be poor fuel consumption, and hesitancy when throttle pedal pressed? TBH if you've got some cash tied up in it, its probably worth getting a decent Indy to have a look at it for you?
that sounds odd re the gearbox- you checked the fluid level? My bro's old BMW auto used to do that when the box was low on fluid. no reverse, select 1st, then back to reverse and she's move
