Is shifting to neutral a "pull both paddles and get N" or "move the selector to N"?

Hadn't tried both paddles, will give that a go. I was shifting the lever. I don't worry too much about going into N but going back to D makes me uneasy which means this strategy is being used less than I would like.

that sounds odd re the gearbox- you checked the fluid level? My bro's old BMW auto used to do that when the box was low on fluid. no reverse, select 1st, then back to reverse and she's move

The linky including instructions on how to clean various parts, the owner also went for an EGR delete. I'll get the garage to check the fluid level at some point - this week is going to be tricky though.
And Hermann might be off to Audi to have some rust (yes really, rust
) sorted out...
