Normally when you start the engine, the ring gear (attached to the crankshaft) is stopped. The starter gear pushes/engages into it and then starts spinning to turn it.
When the engine is running, the ring gear is spinning. If you hit the starter, the starter gear gets pushed into an already spinning ring gear.
Sort of like poking your finger into a spinning fan. You would be screeching too!
