I wonder what was really going on there.
In the seventies as the first oil crisis raged and gas was on limits, some experimented with paint thinner and such.
Nowadays these get taxed so badly that they are more expensive than gas, but when they weren't you could apparently mix them in with the gas or evaporate them ahead of the intake to reduce the use of (proper) gas.
Maybe he hit upon a source of something cheap to mix in?
I'd rather learn from a mistake than just cover it up.
