Exactly. With our diesels there is really no point in killing the engine. When they are fully warmed up they show 450 mpg or more on the ScanGuage with the engine on! Gas engines are much less efficient at idle and EOC works well for many gasser drivers.
Eon-C saves wear and tear and keeps brakes, power steering and airbags fully functional on our VWs. My biggest fear is starving the turbo of oil. That alone makes me leery of EOC.
I hope you do get to try DFCO on your mountain commute. Decelleration Fuel Cut-Off or "engine braking" allows you to run all your accessories for free, zero fuel used. I find I have to shift as low as third on some descents (and run A/C) to keep from using the brakes much. I have used DFCO and Eon-C and my 90 day average is 60 mpg over the last 3 tanks of fuel.
