Electonically-controlled, solenoid-operated, values have been the "dream" of automotive engineers for years...

Problem is, solenoids have too much mass and inertia to react, rate-of-change-wise, to be fast enough. They work for very slow RPM engines, but cannot handle high RPMs. It takes a LOT of energy to shove valves OPEN & CLOSED against valve springs; and, they don't have the OFF power to HOLD valves CLOSED in their de-energized state.
