That's what I keep telling people and even posting in heater reviews on Amazon - it just doesn't seem to sink in. These are the same people who don't realize that food comes from something besides a window set in the side of a building.

For $40 you can have a heater from Walmart that works exactly as well as the $400 heater, except you still have that $360 left over. That pays a few electric bills.

I read a post from a guy on permies.com that described the bare minimum of electricity to heat a single person to a comfortable level in an otherwise cold (about 55 deg. IIRC) house. Answer: about 70 watts. I think that's right, if anyone is burning to know I can try to look that back up, it was an interesting read.

Heated dog mat on the floor. Radiant lamps above the workstation (like you'd put in your lizard terrarium). Heated mouse pad.

Heated mouse pad? I didn't know such things were even out there.

And to test the result, the big guy for whom this was all set up had his young scrawny intern try it out. Ten minutes in, she'd taken her vest off and rolled up her sleeves. So it seems to get the job done.
