Need advice on exhaust

So here's where I can use some help. I bought a header for the 1L, with claimed 8hp gain in power. Unfortunately, when we mocked up the exhaust with the motorcycle mufflers we had laying around, it ends up looking awkward -- the collector on the header is straight out the back, and there isn't room to fit a muffler in-line under the k-member coming out below the rear bumper (even if we french the exhaust tip into the lower body lip). I think it would look much better if we used the factory exhaust manifold, which bends 90 degrees and would let me run a tip or two out the passenger rear fender in front of the rear wheel, WWII-style. Any thoughts? I was originally planning on using the header for the xfi project anyway, no I have no regrets on not using it unless the gain in HP makes a big difference in driveability.

PS MetroMPG -- you can see how the rear wheel sits relative to the fender opening in these pics.
