You method may get you in the ballpark on a level nonstop drive after much trial and error. Many people look at the gas gauge and say it looks like I'm doing better. This to is not very reliable. There are far too many variables wind, traffic, hills, temperature, etc. With real time feedback from an MPG gauge you get to see how every touch of the pedal, hill and condition change affect MPGs.
