Far too much depends on load and throttle position you can be making 5mpg to 999999mpg in the same gear at the same speed without seeing "fuel/time" you will never know. This may put you close in some conditions but could lead you to making an incorrect assumption more often than not. It also does not give you a cumulative average, which can be as or more important than instantaneous for figuring out how you are doing. If you want real feedback you need some sort of instrumentation.
