Who said anything about unmuffled?
Mine has no muffler... but it still has a cast iron manifold, two catalytic converters, and full-length stock tubing with a bunch of bends. All of this works to quiet down the exhaust.
Now, I know it's quieter inside than outside and it's tough to hear it myself, since my wife almost never drives it. However, it's nearly as quiet as stock at idle and my mother-in-law has repeatedly mentioned "Oh, I didn't hear you pull in" when I stop by to drop off the kids. So far, I have no reason to believe I'm bothering anyone else with the exhaust.
If I can get a coworker to help, I'd even be up for checking the actual decibel output since we have a calibrated sound level meter at work.
