I've had several samurai's. decent mileage (upper 20s) and would go anywhere you would care to take it. My ultimate dream off roader is a LWB samurai with a vw tdi, on 33s with front and rear lockers. It'd go anywhere and still pull upper 20s.
From what I understand the sidekicks (and trackers) are nearly as good, with the only difference being the IFS vs Solid front axle.
I also kind of covet a suzuki Jimny (coil sprung evolved samurai) as a base for a small offroad rig.
