There is a method of getting an ISO of the update but that needs a product key.
And OEM installs no longer have that little sticker.

Windows 8 is a pain
Windows 8.1 is slightly less painful
To get the product key all you need to do is install and run
Belarc Advisor
The key should look like this xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
If this fails as long as Windows 8 was a legal copy call microsoft and they should send you a new key

IMO Windows 8 is a downgrade from Windows 7. One OS should never be used for desktops, laptops, tablets, phones, etc. Which is what Windows 8 was designed for
