In the EU they made a law that states all chargers are the same. Yep works. All the devices in my house - phones, tablets, even stuff like sat navs and radar detectors all use the same micro USB connector shape.

Except for Mrs A's iPhone and A-Junior's iPad.

My moan of the day is Windows 8 - Mrs A's work PC has the operating system of choice in Hades installed, and now it won't open any of the built in apps - no Store, SkyDrive etc. Nothing Metro based except Wordamont her fave game.

OK I think - lets go 8.1, maybe that will fix it ?

Available via the store.

Which doesn't open.

There is a method of getting an ISO of the update but that needs a product key.

And OEM installs no longer have that little sticker.

I sense a downgrade to Windows 7 coming on, and a busy evening ahead.

Because it's not 'really' a charging port, it's a data connection port that happens to also provide power? So tablet charges, and probably would do USB data connection if I didn't have wireless on my router; cell phone charges and does data transfer; cameras only do data transfer, and require separate charger for the battery.

Most US chargers that are only chargers are pretty much the same for a given voltage & current level, so the 'wall warts' are fairly interchangable.

Windows 8 is a pain
Windows 8.1 is slightly less painful
To get the product key all you need to do is install and run
Belarc Advisor
The key should look like this xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

If this fails as long as Windows 8 was a legal copy call microsoft and they should send you a new key

IMO Windows 8 is a downgrade from Windows 7. One OS should never be used for desktops, laptops, tablets, phones, etc. Which is what Windows 8 was designed for

Thanks. I have the product key. The real problem is that anything which uses mshtml.dll crashes, although strangely IE seems to work just fine. So no app store and nothing which uses Metro. It all started (or stopped) when Mrs A installed Skype.

I agree win 8 is not fit for purpose.

The 8.1 upgrade is just a straw to clutch at. I can see a full restore coming on.

Turn signals. Or, lack thereof.

I hate passing cars, but just because there is a flake of snow on the ground, does not mean one needs to go 28 in a 55. C'mon son.

And when one is stuck behind this person, several turns without turn signals, and random braking- with zero other traffic on the road- means I can't drive behind this person anymore.

Tried sfc /scannow and it tells me mshtml.dll is corrupted but also refuses to fix it saying the one in the store is also corrupt. Tried to get the 8.1 installer to work using the product key but it says no.

One last thing to try is the 8.0 install with the key and see if there is a repair option of some type.

I hate computers, they will never catch on.
