A new requirement is 5 star crash rating. That eliminates the Toyota Echo/Yaris. I see that the Toyota Corolla is 5 star. Is that a better car than a civic?

My current vehicle (Jeep Liberty) Has now been sent to the junkyard. (too costly to fix) So the search is on in earnest. What specifics items should I look for in looking at these cars? I know it is important for the civic hybrid to find the age of the battery and if any codes are being shown. Any other advice is recommended.
