So, last night I tried a different way home to avoid the interstate. I seem to get better mileage on 35-55 mph roads. The alternative route cuts out the interstate and seemed to have achieved a higher mpg than the interstate route.
The bad: It goes through some sketchy areas, there are 40ish traffic lights and most of them are timed wrong. I hit probably 20 of them. This route took me about 15 extra minutes than the interstate. At 10 pm, after being up from 5:30 am, I don't want to add 15 minutes to my drive. Instead of getting home at 10:30, I got home at 10:45.
It looks like I am going to stick with the interstate for now.
