Braking is braking, whether you do it with the service brakes, parking brake, downshifting, running through slush, veering onto a soft shoulder, or drifting.
It's useful to know these tricks for situations where the brakes fail. I have twice driven cars with no brakes at all. But if your goal is to drive without brakes, then these techniques are cheating.
