Some of those guys are trying some of your ideas RIGHT NOW but they don't want to admit it in the locker room (I mean forum). Did anyone ever make an intelligent response to your great explanation of the differences between DFCO and neutral cruising? I recently began using DFCO in some situations, where I will not be allowed to coast for a long time or will end up with excessive speed and just need braking. In those situations I turn on the alternator and drop into an appropriate gear. I generate power for "free" and if I get a long hill it will cool the engine a few degrees, bringing 195 down to 188 on the coolant temp gauge.

I will rebuild Black and Green over decades as parts die, until it becomes a different car of roughly the same shape and color. My minimum fuel economy goal is 55 mpg while averaging posted speed limits. I generally top 60 mpg. See also my Honda manual transmission specs thread.
