My father has had upwards of 3/4 ton in the back of our zx40 without issue. mini trucks are available in 1 ton designations, a handfull of "export" models even can come with a diesel. As simple as they are there is no reason that you couldn't beef up the backend if you needed more than 1 ton carrying cap.

Oh, and you can buy mini trucks legally for the road, but they need to either
1. Be an electric conversion with a speed limiter
2. Be purchased by the government for on road use

Then you can buy it used if your state will cooperate with you.
