I had an '85 Civic 1.3 manual for almost 12 years. Drove it above the Arctic circle in Finland. Drove it on a beach. Drove it to my marriage. Did things and carried stuff I never thought it could do.
It lasted almost 19 years in our seawind climate (spent years of its life very close to the beach) and died of rust, still mechanically healthy at over 160,000 miles / 280,000 km.
Sweet memories. I loved that car.
I wasn't into ecomodding back then, but still regularly did over 40 mpg.
Had a leaking radiator twice. It was both very economical and powerful with a hot engine; it would rev much higher then.
Raced Daihatsu GTTI turbos, Golf TDIs and beamer 3 series on a par while in the book those were 2 to 3 seconds faster to 60 mph!
I was supposed to change to 2nd gear at 25 mph max, 3rd at 50 max but it easily went to 30 and 60 respectively.
Slam shifting first to 2nd which kept the wheels spinning for seconds while sapping the momentum from the high revving engine, that in particular made me pull away from the other guys.
Finally the radiator leak became too bad and I got a new one, spoiling the fun a bit.
Other than that and some minor issues it kept running fine.
If I still had it now I would definitely do a grille block and WAI, but also cool the carburetor and fuel pump; it was prone to vapour lock.
