Re: living closer to where you work... Please realize that a lot of folks in this economy (a) are blessed if they've been able to keep their home during these tough times, and (b) have to take a job if it pays the bills, whether or not it's closer to home. I know that I fall into both the above categories.
I'd love to live 10-15 minutes drive from work; I could bicycle three out of four seasons. But my wife's commute would go from 45 minutes to over an hour. And vice versa, if we moved closer to her job. It's all a balance, I believe.
Re: slow drivers (i.e., me)... The speed limit on interstates here in Connecticut is 65, most places. I drive 55, unless I am coasting. have noticed a few minutes time difference at the most, but many, many times, someone who blew by me at 80 takes my exit and I end up right behind him at the light. I laugh and wonder if anyone else but us gets it; it just isn't worth it. I leave for work 15 minutes early, have less engine and road noise, don't tailgate or cuss at anyone, and generally start my day with much less stress.
And that's in addition to improving my fuel economy! What could be better?
