As I have mentioned repeatedly, I hit an elk driving home from my parents' house. I hate to think how differently that might have gone, had I been driving faster than 55 MPH.

usmclowrider, have you tried any of the other suggestions? Inflate tires to sidewall psi? Block half your grill? There are tons of other tricks and mods to lower fuel consumption too.

I got my whole lower grill blocked, tires inflated to 52 psi, water wetter in the radiator, synthentic engine and cvt fluid. I had my car lowered, but needed more suspension travel. That height adjustment was worth about 5 mpg when it was lowered. Got to get my lawn edging air dam reinstalled assuming the cold stuff is done with. Got the later insight rear spats that go behind the rear tires to install.

Re: living closer to where you work... Please realize that a lot of folks in this economy (a) are blessed if they've been able to keep their home during these tough times, and (b) have to take a job if it pays the bills, whether or not it's closer to home. I know that I fall into both the above categories.
I'd love to live 10-15 minutes drive from work; I could bicycle three out of four seasons. But my wife's commute would go from 45 minutes to over an hour. And vice versa, if we moved closer to her job. It's all a balance, I believe.
Re: slow drivers (i.e., me)... The speed limit on interstates here in Connecticut is 65, most places. I drive 55, unless I am coasting. have noticed a few minutes time difference at the most, but many, many times, someone who blew by me at 80 takes my exit and I end up right behind him at the light. I laugh and wonder if anyone else but us gets it; it just isn't worth it. I leave for work 15 minutes early, have less engine and road noise, don't tailgate or cuss at anyone, and generally start my day with much less stress.
And that's in addition to improving my fuel economy! What could be better?

Yes, this is the biggest change I have noticed since "adjusting the nut behind the wheel".

I have laughed at the same thing. Lived in Northern VA for 8 years and this was a regular happening anytime we went somewhere. People really don't understand that we almost always catch up at the next light.

New Mexico also sets their speed limits very low. Santa Fe seems to think people who live south of Santa Fe/Albuquerque are all drunk or otherwise incapacitated. We had a 70 mile stretch of four-lane divided highway set for 55 mph until a person from Santa Fe actually had to drive on the road.

Man you're late, I've been trying to tell them for years, back when the speed limit was 65 tops... Now they're up to 70 and 75 and even 80, it's not going to stop, they don't care.

I drive 70 km/hr on most roads, as that is all my two-year license will allow.
Autobahn type roads allow me to go 90km/hr, where others are allowed 130 in the summer and 110 in the winter.

I haven't driven over 78hm/hr in my life... I had to pass a moped who didn't trust that I'd let him come in front of me and let him get over in the other lane. Other than that, I usually stay between 68 and 73km/hr. My speedometer is shows something like 2 km/hr more than speed checkers show me, so I know I'm not going over by more than 1 km/hr. Nevertheless, I prefer to stay at or below the speed limit.

I would love a higher speed limit just to test the fuel economy of my car at 70-80+ mph, my car is like a bullet you just touch the gas maybe 15% throttle and watch her creep up faster and faster, i'm sure my car sit for an hour above 75mph at 15% throttle
