Yeah, I tested mine in the driveway, just let it idle in drive with the brake on (I have an auto), then once the temp stopped rising I held the brake and revved the motor a little. Light came on with the fan at 204F, went off at 200.
I like your solution of not even running the wire into the cabin, that would have been handy. After not finding any easy way to get the lead through the firewall, I ran it behind the driver front quarter panel and in through the door. Inelegant, but it works.
