Could try higher output bulbs. A silghtly off color red LED in the high mount or third brake light might help. The LED is at full intensity a fraction of a second sooner. I remember how bright the small blue lenses were that people occasionally had in their brake lights.

Seems like a well thought out plan to use red for stop signs and traffic lights. Maybe it should have yellow, red then green.
