I love it when we rent a car to an Aussie and have to explain how an automatic works to them. "No no, just leave it in D if you are going forwards!" I was pleasantly surprised when a friend of mine recently asked me to teach her how to drive manual. "Well, it's a good thing to know, isn't it?" Yes! Yes it is. Sadly that attitude is the minority.

The wholesale car business doesn't help the third pedal out either. Dealerships looking for used inventory for their lots always deduct huge for a car that has a manual. They are seen as something you will get stuck with until that one rare person that actually wants a stick will come along. So in general you just don't buy them as you will be waiting a long time to sell it. It's sad to see them go, but not surprising.
