Oh, is that what it is? I supposed it was for aerodynamics, like a front air dam.

Just looking at it, though, if you changed the headlamps for modern ones faired into the fenders, got rid of the side-mounted spare tire, and used modern curved glass for the windshiield, it seems as though you'd wind up with decent aero.
