The recommended tire pressures on the Vehicle Certification Label in the door are simply so that tires wear evenly. Over inflated tires will wear the center faster and underinflated will wear the shoulders faster. The ideal choice is to use the smallest possible tire(max load=GAWR/2) with the highest tire pressure so they wear evenly. A good example of this was on the poorly engineered Audi Cabriolet S Lines which weighed a few pounds shy of 2 tons and recommended 46 psi in 40 series tires.
