I run around 50 psi. I don't check them too often to be honest. I use 50 since IMO that gives me some leeway. I just want them to be kept above 40-45 really. Ride comfort isn't really an issue on the cars I have despite horrible Wisconsin roads. The stock springs are soft enough for me.

Yeah. I don't check too frequently either. Need to right now, actually. I get the times warmed up first, check, and pump them to 60 psi. That's so that cool or cold I have my best chance at staying near, at, or above 54 psi (44 recommended on the sidewalls). MetroMPG in his test--IIRC--found 10 psi over sidewall to be the point where benefits seemed to max out. Good enough for me.

You don't what psi your tires are until you check them. I thought i was at 55psi. Went to refill with nitrogen for the first time in 6 months and i was at 35psi. What a nightmare!

Run 38-40 in the warmer months (the roads in DC beat the car too hard with higher psi) Run 35-37 in the colder months to keep the ride tolerable.

The recommended tire pressures on the Vehicle Certification Label in the door are simply so that tires wear evenly. Over inflated tires will wear the center faster and underinflated will wear the shoulders faster. The ideal choice is to use the smallest possible tire(max load=GAWR/2) with the highest tire pressure so they wear evenly. A good example of this was on the poorly engineered Audi Cabriolet S Lines which weighed a few pounds shy of 2 tons and recommended 46 psi in 40 series tires.

You don't think the vehicle manufacturer is trying to balance tread wear, ride quality, handling, load capacity, rolling resistance, snow and wet traction, tire/road noise? It's only a recommended pressure for tread wear?
