A local racing school once did that for a fuel economy demonstration. They made a fiberglass hood, then cut a hole in it and added a mount for an upside down two liter soda bottle attached to the fuel rail.
This was on a direct injection diesel, however... so I don't know if the lack of a high speed fuel pump on the tank side hurt it or if there is a high pressure pump on the rail that pulls in the fuel.
Of course, it's a very impractical way to do things...
