How big is that chunk? Did you weigh it? If it is steel then it would weigh 8.6 grams per CC.
It does not look that big.
Also the washer that goes with the plug looks like it can be stacked, so if you have a bunch of them those seem ideal to lift the plug to controllably and reversably enlarge the volume.
Now those photos have taken away one of my worries.
The thread is the medium that cools the plug, but in the area where you cut it the core does not touch the metal. So I guess it won't get too much thermal stress there.
