When BMW's twin went from flathead to OHV, the horsepower jumped from (from memory) 24 to 36hp. Big change in the width too. The flathead boxer is remarkably narrow.
The restricted breathing is why the flathead Ford V8 took so well to the GMC 6-71 supercharger. It leveled the playing field.
