4th year = $4211
The reason the costs fluctuate every year is due to maintenance costs (assuming i follow the manufacturer suggested maintenance schedule)

Buying a used Civic for $3500
1st year - $7226
2nd year - $2775
3rd year - $2775
4th year - $2775

Taking the Metrolink and bus
per year - $4134

Over time, it appears my cheapest option is to take the train/bus to work.

Though the civic costs way less in gas/maintenance, the initial price of the car brings the average back up. Therefore, I will have to drive the civic for at least 4 years to break even with taking the train.
As I see it, the STI comes to $4,906 average; the civic comes to $3,887 average; and the train/bus comes to $4134. The civic still comes in as the best average over the four years, assuming no other maintenance items crop up. But you're right, the train/bus might be your best bet for the commute because it's cost is almost guaranteed, but could go up.
