I could sell you my Echo for an inflated price and you have 50mpg potential right off the bat, plus I'd make a profit vs. what it's really worth!
Sure it gets a p0420 code every 300mi or so. It's a CARB certified car having been sold in CA originally and I guarantee it's reliability and that it'll pass smog...

lol, thanks for the offer!
Interview went neutral today. He wasn't overly enthusiastic about me, but he didnt outright reject me.
We'll see how it turns out.
UPDATES: since i fixed the sagging rear cross member, my butt dyno senses that i coast a little longer now

I got the new job in Los Angeles...start date of 12/1/2014. So now I am facing a 100mile daily commute on the sti
I did the calculations, now im going to burn through my 60,000 mile /6 year extended warranty in less than 2 years. (unless i buy used beater civic )
(yes, yes, extended warranties are a waste...but it's my first turbo car so i dont want to front the bill if something goes wrong)
On the way home from the interview, i got stuck behind a really slow big rig, so i was able to p&g 80% of the commute...
BEST TANK EVER! 32.4MPG!

Congratulations! If it's a long term job, you've gotta consider moving. I did an 80 mile commute for a while, then just had to move. It was fun trying to get better mpg for a while, but it got old getting up at 4:00 am to get to work at 6:00 am; plus getting home at 8:00 pm didn't allow much time for life. The good thing was that there wasn't much traffic in No Cal at that time of morning.

If you plan on keeping this job for over a year, and if you can get 45mpg out of a HX, or a VX, I would say get one. In one year at 45mpg over 32 you will save around 2k. Not to mention your going to slaughter the re-sale value on that Sti if you decide to sell it in the future.

I crunched the numbers on the 100 mile daily commute.
Sti
1st year = $5068
2nd year = $4973
3rd year = $5373
4th year = $4211
The reason the costs fluctuate every year is due to maintenance costs (assuming i follow the manufacturer suggested maintenance schedule)
Buying a used Civic for $3500
1st year - $7226
2nd year - $2775
3rd year - $2775
4th year - $2775
Taking the Metrolink and bus
per year - $4134
Over time, it appears my cheapest option is to take the train/bus to work.
Though the civic costs way less in gas/maintenance, the initial price of the car brings the average back up. Therefore, I will have to drive the civic for at least 4 years to break even with taking the train.

As I see it, the STI comes to $4,906 average; the civic comes to $3,887 average; and the train/bus comes to $4134. The civic still comes in as the best average over the four years, assuming no other maintenance items crop up. But you're right, the train/bus might be your best bet for the commute because it's cost is almost guaranteed, but could go up.

Also i have to consider
sti/civic = 2 hour commute stuck in traffic
vs
train = 2 hour commute while i can sleep, read, watch movies, play games, do homework, etc

And that is why I rode the Metro for the 8 years I worked in DC. One hour on the train reading or relaxing both going and before getting home. Short bus ride to my home completed the commute.

Also, the less that you drive your car, the longer it lasts!
