Ironically, the only time I've rented any vehicles was to perform my own "long-term" driver evaluation of a vehicle...which entailed driving it from Tucson, AZ, to either Yuma, AZ, or Los Angeles (in-city testing). And, both times, we decided NOT to buy the vehicles (both mini-vans).
