The first step is to find some equipment that'll do what you want (regenerative braking), so you'll want a permanent magnet DC motor and a controller that does regen, or an AC motor and controller that does regen. Second, you have to find a way to hook it up to your drivetrain in a way that allows you to disconnect the gas engine from the wheels or transmission. It won't be easy, thats why we don't see many on the road.
