You might be surprised, but it's not that hard to find a dead/beater 928. The problem is that in stock form, they are a complete nightmare to maintain. A lot of stuff isn't DIY-able unless you buy horrifyingly expensive Porsche tools, so you're stuck going to horrifyingly expensive Porsche-specialist mechanics, to deal with a maintenance schedule that's demanding even by Porsche standards.

...or just swap in an SBC and call it a day. There's even a kit, I think.
