Manual operation is fine for testing.
Its time to get some automation going.

The easiest simplest way I can think of to automate this process is to stay mechanical use a heater core to warm the air with coolant and put an adjustable thermostatic valve with sensing bulb.
Set it and forget it.
Maybe add a N/O valve to close off the coolant flow to the heater core for up hill, passing, trailer pulling, where you generally want cooler air so you don't get detonation.
