Already ahead of you. I would just paint it to look like bare metal using metallic paint. ( Not just spray paint either - that just looks fake )
Paint it by hand and paint in all of the variances in color and such.
If I had an G1 Insight, I would
absolutely do this, since it is aluminum.
You can also get a brushed steel vinyl wrap for the plastic parts - much like this car here, ( although this doesn't look like brushed metal ) :
