I wouldn't worry too much about the regen button, honestly, just saying that a grid charge is comparatively less stessful.
When the voltage stops climbing, it means most of the the cells are nearing full. You'll want to keep charging it at least 4-8 hours past that to get a balanced battery, possibly 12 for your first grid charge.
