TIP--for a controlled *spacing* try placing a piece of water-soluable sewing stiffener (cloth that dissolves) between the plates...which you simply "wash" away by setting the finished plate-assembly in water and letting the stiffener material dissolve away.
My wife does a lot of sewing and embroidery.
