I love those old 5.9 engines, but not because they are efficient. If you want better than 12-13 mpg, get something else. If you're happy getting a MAXIMUM of 15mpg out of it on the highway, keep it and start hypermiling. That engine family was kept around because it was a workhorse and cheap to build.
Seriously, if you are concerned at all with MPG there is no hope for that truck.
