OTOH, I knew a guy in the 70s (I bought a house from him) that bought $500 Cadillacs and dumped them instead of fixing them.

I love those old 5.9 engines, but not because they are efficient. If you want better than 12-13 mpg, get something else. If you're happy getting a MAXIMUM of 15mpg out of it on the highway, keep it and start hypermiling. That engine family was kept around because it was a workhorse and cheap to build.

Seriously, if you are concerned at all with MPG there is no hope for that truck.

Its that or I'm going to install a 35 gallon tank, I just need 300 mile range and I was hoping to do it the better way and not getting a bigger tank

15 is pretty easy in the summer to get. It's Winter now, so all you can really do is wait. Be light on the foot and you might hit 15 this Winter and get better in the summer.

I have a 10.6 gallon tank and two 20-liter genuine NATO gas cans. I normally keep the one on the right filled to balance my weight in the driver's seat, and cycle it though the main tank occasionally.

It doubles the range, which is important when you run clear premium.

It would take more than a six gallon tank to balance me out!

If you only need a 6gal tank to balance out driver's weight; is the driver affecting the vehicle enough to worry about in the first place??
