I found several references to mounting gauges and such on the A-pillar panel and mounting on the lower third to avoid the curtain bags in there. The panels are held by spring clips. The bags seem to be designed to push the panels out of the spring clip holds when deployed. I may try clamping to the panel on the passenger side instead of mounting through it on mine. Maybe a longer gooseneck stem to get the mirror closer to the side glass.
