There are a few options that I know in that weight class:
- Peugeot 106 1.5D
- Citroën Saxo 1.5D
- Citroën AX 1.5D
- Peugeot 205 1.8D
- Peugeot 206 1.4 HDi
- Renault Clio 1.5 dCi
- Some versions of the VW Polo diesel
Yeah I'm a bit biased on the French cars

The 205 seems to be good performance-wise, and has a nice handling. 106, Saxo and AX seem to be still a good base for a 3L/100km project, even with their old-school IDI setup. They also tend to be somehow more tollerant to experiences with alternative fuels (mostly biodiesel or pure plant oils) due to indirect injection. The same applies to some versions of the Polo, while others would have a direct injection which is often deemed not so suitable to the usage of veg oils as fuel, but we must not forget the Elko Multifuel engine from the '80s had direct injection and phisically resembles the 1.4TDI at some extent...
With direct injection in the 206 1.4HDi, the Clio and some versions of the Polo you could eventually also perform some experiences with home-brewed ethanol, using some orange peel oily extract as an ignition improver. BTW wasn't the 206 also available with the DW8 indirect-injection engine?
